Pembroke Man Killed By Train

Police in Pembroke say that on September 2, a man died of the personal injuries he suffered when he was struck by a passing train as he was sitting beside the tracks.

According to Pembroke Police Chief Dwayne Hunt, shortly after 9 p.m., 39-year-old Pembroke resident Howard Franklin Zeigler III was sitting beside railroad tracks near the corner of Third and Main streets when the engineer sounded the horn and Zeigler looked up.

Hunt said that Zeigler was never actually on the tracks and that it was actually the set of steps on the train that struck him.

Hunt said Zeigler was struck on the head. He received transport to Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton, where he was later pronounced dead.

Hunt said that Zeigler had been drinking.
