An accident in Rutherford County has resulted in 16-year-old Andrew Head suffering fatal personal injuries. He died on the night of January 28 after receiving transport to Mission Hospital.
Head was a passenger in a vehicle driven by 17-year-old Cody Smith, who was released from the hospital after being treated for minor injuries. Another passenger, 16-year-old Barry Arrowood Jr., remained in the hospital in stable condition.
According to Sgt. Kevin Owens of the North Carolina Highway Patrol, all three teenagers had been drinking and were on their way to Head’s home when Smith lost control of the vehicle, which ran off Chisholm Road and collided with a tree around 10 p.m. on the night of the accident.
Owens said the car was traveling at an estimated rate of 60 mph at the time of the crash.
Smith will face multiple charges, including DWI, reckless driving, and failure to comply with driving provisions.
