One Man Seriously Injured In I-40 Crash Near Durham

One man suffered seriously personal injuries in an accident on Interstate 40 on September 12 near the Page Road exit in Durham that left traffic backed up for miles.

According to police, 25-year-old Caesar Antonio Garcia Hernandez was eastbound on I-40 in a 1995 Saturn at approximately 5 p.m. when he began to head toward the Page Road exit ramp, but then tried to merge back onto the highway and struck a large digital message sign, Durham police say.

Garcia Hernandez then crossed the eastbound lanes and collided with a Chevrolet Impala in the leftmost lane driven by Statesville resident Frank Lackey.

Police say Garcia Hernandez received transport to Duke University Hospital with serious injuries to the head. Lackey and the three passengers in his vehicle were unharmed.

According to police, Garcia Hernandez had also been involved in a hit-and-run collision 30 minutes prior to this crash near the intersection of Holloway Street and Miami Boulevard. Both accidents remain under investigation.
