One Killed, Two Injured In Wake Forest DWI Crash

A man from Wake Forest has been charged with driving while impaired by North Carolina state troopers after a two-vehicle crash on September 5 in which one person died and two others suffered personal injuries.

According to Trooper Paul Burggraf, 21-year-old Christopher Philip May was eastbound on Ligon Mill Road near Greenville Loop in a 2008 black Honda Civic when he drifted into the oncoming lane and struck another vehicle. A passenger in his vehicle, 23-year-old Matthew Lyle Achterman, died in the crash.

May and a 17-year-old passenger received transport to WakeMed, where they underwent treatment for injuries that were not life-threatening, according to Burggraf. None of the other vehicle’s occupants were injured.

According to troopers, Achterman, a back seat passenger, was not wearing his seat belt and was ejected during the collision.

Police charged May with DWI, driving left of center, and felony death by motor vehicle. As of September 6, he was being held in Wake County Jail under $50,000 bond.
