While en route to a concert in Greensboro, a Miley Cyrus tour bus overturned on southbound Interstate 85 in Dinwiddie County, Virginia on November 20, killing the driver and causing another person to suffer personal injuries, according to the Virginia State Police. Cyrus was not a passenger on the bus, one of four that were traveling in a caravan toward the pop star’s Greensboro concert.
Nine members of the tour’s lighting crew were on board when the bus overturned at approximately 8:15 a.m. One persona suffered a broken nose and received transport to Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg.
The bus left Nassau, New York early on the morning of the crash. Cyrus had performed there for the previous two nights.
Police had no immediate explanation for why the crash occurred. The bus ran off the road and turned over onto its right side in an inclined area. Officials do not believe speed or road conditions to have been a factor.
The driver, who was killed in the crash, was identified as 53-year-old Austin, Texas resident William G. Douglas. The injured person was identified as 48-year-old Canada resident Marty Zilio.
Officials say most of the bus’ passengers were sleeping when the crash occurred. They crawled through the front windshield to escape the bus.
Police noted that Cyrus was traveling separately from the buses.
