One Killed, One Injured In Wilmington Crash

According to the Wilmington Police Department, 19-year-old Wilmington resident died early on the morning of January 5 as a result of the personal injuries she suffered in a crash on Carolina Beach Road.

Whitney was a recent graduate of Ashley High School, where she was a member of the girls’ golf team for four seasons and was an honorable mention for the StarNews All-Area team in 2008.

Whitney graduated in 2009 and was a member of the women’s golf team at Queens University in Charlotte.

According to the preliminary investigation, Whitney was southbound when she rear-ended the car in front of her. Police say she was not wearing her seatbelt and was ejected.

The vehicle Whitney struck was propelled into a nearby car lot, where it caused damage to four other cars. The driver, 46-year-old Wilmington resident Prisciliano Barajas-Barajas received transport to New Hanover Regional Medical Center for injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

Investigators believe speed to have been a factor.
