A woman died of the personal injuries she suffered on August 2 when she was struck by a hit-and-run driver on Interstate 95 as she and her boyfriend were changing a flat tire, according to police in Lumberton.
According to Lt. Johnny Barnes of the Lumberton Police Department, the accident took place at 10:30 p.m. in the northbound lane near Exit 13.
Barnes said that 23-year-old Ashley Smith received transport to Southeastern Regional Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead.
Barnes said that 30-year-old Broderick Jones was transferred to Duke Hospital in Durham, but his injuries were not known.
At the time of the accident, the car was parked on the shoulder of the northbound lane, according to Barnes. Smith was standing to the left rear of the vehicle when she and Jones were hit.
Police are still seeking information about the driver who hit them.
