One Killed, One Injured In High Speed Crash In Raleigh

One man has died and another suffered personal injuries in a violent collision in Raleigh on the morning of May 15.

Police charged the driver of the car, 32-year-old Isidro Mendez, was felony death by motor vehicle after the crash, which occurred on Lake Wheeler Road. He is also suspected of being an illegal immigrant.

North Carolina state troopers say that Mendez was driving south at an estimated speed of 90 mph in a 35 mph zone when he lost control of the 2001 Chevrolet pickup truck he was driving and overcorrected, causing the truck to run off the road and collided with several trees. The truck sustained severe damage, causing both Mendez and his passenger, 27-year-old Rafael Infante Virrueta, to become pinned in the truck.

Virrueta died in the crash.

Troopers cite speed and alcohol as factors in the accident.

Mendez was taken to the hospital, but was released after undergoing treatment. He is current being held without bond.
