One East Wake Student Injured In Crash Dies

An East Wake High School student who suffered critical personal injuries in a December 7 crash in Knightdale died of his injuries the following day, according to a WakeMed spokeswoman.

The victim, 16-year-old Zebulon resident Gavin William Boyd, was a passenger in a 1996 Chevrolet Camaro that ran off Puryear Road shortly before 1 p.m. The car rolled multiple times after it ran off the road, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

The vehicle’s driver, 17-year-old Austin Wade Marx, received treatment at WakeMed and was later released.

Both Marx and Boyd were wearing their seat belts.

According to investigating state trooper Beckley Vaughan, charges are pending because the vehicle was traveling at a rate of speed “well in excess” of the 55 mph speed limit.
