On the night of December 31, a teenager from Sanford suffered fatal personal injuries after driving across the center line of St. Andrews Church Road and colliding with a minivan, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
The NCHP said that 18-year-old Robert Anthony Young II was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. His passenger, 18-year-old Sanford resident Nicholas Ellis, received helicopter transport to Duke Hospital and was listed in critical condition as of January 1.
The driver of the other vehicle, 30-year-old Sanford resident Jesus Sauzo, was northbound on St. Andrews Church Road near Kentrywood Farm Road in a Dodge minivan at about 7:30 p.m. when Young’s Honda collided with his van. He received transport to a Sanford hospital and was later released.
Troopers cited speed as a factor, but alcohol was not a factor. Sauzo was the lone person involved wearing a seat belt.
