One Dead, Seven Injured In Orange County Crash

A teenager from Ohio suffered fatal personal injuries in a three-vehicle accident on Interstate 40 West in Orange County on the afternoon of March 30, according to North Carolina state troopers.

Troopers charged Charlotte resident Jose Hermi Santos Tobias with misdemeanor death by vehicle in the wreck that claimed the life of 16-year-old Pickering, Ohio resident Traven Olsson Keigley.

According to troopers, Tobias was driving a Pontiac sport utility vehicle that hydroplaned near the I-40 split with Interstate 85 and collided with a Nissan Murano and a 2008 Dodge pickup truck.

The Nissan, occupied by five people, including Keigley, collided with the guard rail, overturned, and landed in a ditch, troopers said. Keigley was not wearing his seat belt and was ejected.

The other four Nissan occupants, two occupants of the Dodge, and Tobias were transported to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill for injuries not considered to be life-threatening.

In addition to the death by motor vehicle charge, Tobias was charged with driving without a license.
