One man suffered fatal personal injuries in an automobile accident on Interstate 85 early on the morning of August 12.
According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, 49-year-old Tarpon Springs, Florida resident Michael G. Kapsulis was killed when his 2003 Chevrolet pickup truck ran off the road at about 1 a.m. just south of the intersection with Old U.S. Highway 64. He was southbound on I-85 at the time.
Investigating trooper K. Britt said that Kapsulis was driving at an estimated rate of 60 mph, ran off the road to the right, traveled down an embankment, and collided with a tree stump on the driver’s side. The vehicle then overturned and struck two more trees. Troopers say Kapsulis was not wearing his seat belt.
Britt said that Kapsulis was traveling under the posted speed limit of 70 mph, but road conditions and visibility were poor because of a heavy thunderstorm that had gone through the area earlier that evening. Britt said excessive speed for the conditions was a factor in the accident.
