The North Carolina Highway Patrol responded to a five-car wreck on January 8 in which personal injuries were suffered. The accident is said to have been caused by a driver falling asleep at the wheel.
Troopers said that 18-year-old Bailey resident David Orlando Mendoza was northbound in a 2004 Dodge pickup truck near mile marker 133 on Interstate 95 in Nash County when he fell asleep, crossed the median, and collided with a southbound car pulling a trailer. The car’s driver then lost control and crossed the median back into the northbound lanes. The trailer disconnected and collided with three more vehicles.
None of the injuries were considered to be serious.
Troopers charged Mendoza with careless and reckless driving and driving on a suspended license. Troopers said that speed and alcohol were not factors.
