NC Woman Receives $321,000 After Sidewalk Trip

A North Carolina resident has won $321,321 in damages after a sidewalk slip and fall resulted in a serious injury.

Seventy-three-year-old Ellen Wall and her husband were on vacation for their 50th wedding anniversary in 2005 when Wall tripped and fell on a cracked city sidewalk that was buckling and broken due to the roots of a tree. She lost vision in her right eye - vision that has not been restored even after nine subsequent surgeries.

Although the trial was set to begin next week, the city they were visiting agreed to a settlement out of court. According to their North Carolina slip and fall accident attorney, the settlement was the largest in the city's history, though larger payments have been made after an official verdict.

The city has also agreed to set up sidewalk inspections, maintenance, and safety.
