A North Carolina man is faced with a charge of second-degree murder after police say he drove away from a traffic stop and struck another motorist head-on, causing fatal personal injuries, who was leaving a church event.
According to reports from multiple media outlets, 29-year-old Monroe resident Kevin Ohagan was scheduled to make his first court appearance on October 25. Officials say he has served prison terms of nine months in 2008 and four months in 2005 for drunken driving offenses.
Police said Ohagan was the driver of a pickup truck that struck a vehicle driven by 41-year-old Daniel Herring, who was on his way home from a church event on the night of October 24.
Authorities said that Ohagan had been stopped by officers moments before the accident, but sped way when they approached the truck.
He was being held in Union County Jail on $500,000 bond.
