Maxton Man On Horse And Buggy Killed In Collision
A man from Maxton suffered fatal personal injuries on the night of July 16 after a car struck the horse-drawn buggy he was operating on Red Hill Road from behind, reported the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
The accident report said that 56-year-old Zelbert Locklear was westbound in a horse-drawn buggy without lights or reflectors. He was struck from behind by a westbound 2002 GMC truck driven by Pembroke resident Roger Lee Hunt.
The impact freed the horse, which ran into the side of an eastbound 1997 Nissan driven by 27-year-old Desiree Chavis, the report said.
Locklear died in the accident, but Hunt and Chavis were unharmed. It is unknown if the horse was injured or killed, according to a spokeswoman.
