
Man Who Walked Away From Assisted Living Home Is Found Dead
The body of Dallas Sherwood Stevens, 62, was found in a small pasture just off N.C. Highway 50 near Timber Drive about 1 mile from the Aversboro Assisted Living, where he resided..
Stevens' family are alleging the caregivers at Aversboro Assisted Living failed to monitor him.
The cause of death has not been determined and the case is under investigation.
According to Garner police, Stevens walked away from Aversboro Assisted Living about 8:15 a.m. on Sunday. The state authorities issued a Silver Alert to make the public aware of his disappearance.
Residents are allowed to leave and return on their own, after signing in or out of the facility.
The facility spokeswoman, Deborah Meyer, stated the staff began looking for him when they realized he was missing and had not signed out. The police immediately called.
According to his family, Stevens suffered with dementia, congestive heart failure, diabetes and other health issues. Family said he was so weak he could hardly walk. They expressed feelings that it had to of taken him a long time to just leave the property.
Stevens had been residing at the Assisted Living since last Thursday.
The family is awaiting results from the autopsy.
The Assisted Living is being investigated by the state Department of Health and Human Resources to determine whether or not anything was done wrong.
