A man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter after a 5-year-old girl suffered fatal personal injuries in an attack by a pair of pit bulls owned by the man.
According to a January 26 report in The Charlotte Observer, 23-year-old Michael Brandon Gordon was charged in connection to the death of Makayla Woodard.
Officials said the girl died after being attacked in Waxhaw two weeks prior to the charges being filed. Her 67-year-old grandmother, Nancy Presson, was injured attempting to save her.
A neighbor and cousin of the victim, Amy Plyer, said that Woodard was attacked while attempting to get into a fenced yard next to her home.
A police officer fatally shot one of the dogs. The second ran off but was later located and killed by officers.
Waxhaw police said that Gordon had been warned in December about restraining his dogs. One neighbor said the dogs were known to get loose often. Pyler said one of the dogs that attacked Woodard tended to wander the area.
