Lumberton Woman Killed In Crash

According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, a woman from Lumberton died of the personal injuries she suffered in a single-vehicle crash on Shannon Road.

According to a spokeswoman, 29-year-old Sandra Vergara-Garcia died after her car ran off the road, hit a ditch and culvert pipe, and came to rest on its side.

The report, filed by Trooper James Jones, said the accident occurred shortly before 9 p.m., approximately five miles from Lumberton.

At the time of the crash, Vergara-Garcia was southbound in a 2003 Mitsubishi van. The van crossed the center line, ran off the road, and struck a mailbox. When the van returned to the road, it then ran off the right side, hit the ditch and culvert pipe, and turned on its side, according to a report.

A 2-year-old passenger in the van, Henry Geovany Vergara Machado, suffered injuries in the crash, but his condition was not immediately made available.

The report said the van was traveling at the posted speed limit. Vergara-Garcia was not wearing her seat belt, but the child was properly restrained in a child-restraint seat.
