Lumberton Police said that a woman from Lumberton died of the personal injuries she suffered on the night of April 27 after she was struck by a vehicle while walking on Martin Luther King Drive.
According to the accident report filed by Officer Travis Ransom, 28-year-old Lashanda Colvin died at the scene.
The report said that shortly before 11 p.m., Colvin was walking in the road, in front of the Robeson County Fairgrounds, when a northbound sport utility vehicle driven by Lumberton resident James Fletcher struck her.
Police say Fletcher told them that he was aware he had hit something, but didn't know what it was. According to Lt. Johnny Barnes, he stopped at a store about 400 yards down the road.
Barnes said that Fletcher called the police and officers discovered Colvin's body in a canal along the right side of the road.
