A man suffered fatal personal injuries on the night of March 5 when he was struck by a vehicle while walking on the side of N.C. 211 near the Bladen County line, according to a March 8 statement from the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
Sgt. Freddy Johnson said that 51-year-old Lumberton resident Richard Alan Berger was walking west shortly after 11 p.m. when a westbound Honda van driven by 44-year-old Whiteville resident Penny Price Williams hit him.
Johnson said that Berger was wearing dark-colored clothing and walking in an unlit area at the time.
Berger was transported to Southeastern Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
Johnson said that no charges are expected to be filed.
