On June 29, Harnett County District Attorney Susan Doyle said that she plans on presenting evidence regarding a sport utility crash outside Wal-Mart in Dunn in which a teenage girl died and the driver suffered personal injuries before a grand jury.
In the wreck, which took place on June 4, 16-year-old Ashley Moore, a student at Triton High School in Erwin, was killed and the driver, 18-year-old Dillon Tart, sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Witnesses said that they saw the two arguing inside the vehicle at the Murphy gas station located inside the same parking lot before seeing the SUB accelerate, clip two vehicles, and collide with the front of the store.
Dunn police say that video from nearby surveillance cameras confirmed witness statements that the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed.
Investigators have been attempting to reconstruct the accident in order to determine the vehicle’s speed. They have also been examining the SUV for any mechanical problems and trying to determine if there was a medical problem that led to the accident.
Doyle said she plans upon filing charges against Tart, but has not decided which charges to pursue and she wishes to put the case before a grand jury to determine how to proceed.
The Harnett County grand jury is to meet on July 19.
