Police in Graham County say that a 2-year-old boy remains in critical condition from the personal injuries he suffered when he was mauled by pit bulls belonging to his grandmother.
In a November 8 statement, Sheriff’s Capt. Joseph Jones said that the boy suffered bite wounds to his neck, stomach, and legs while playing in his yard where several of the dogs were roaming free on November 6.
Five pit bulls were quarantined by police at the Haywood County animal shelter and are likely to be euthanized. Joes said the dogs were kept as pets by the family and were not being bred.
The boy’s grandmother told investigators that she had been trying to give the dogs away.
According to a report in the Asheville Citizen-Times, one dog was shot by deputies at the scene.
