Godwin Truck Driver Killed In Crash

A man from Godwin suffered fatal personal injuries in a single-vehicle crash on October 27 when his cattle truck ran off the road and overturned on Interstate 85 near Concord.

At approximately 3:45 a.m., 49-year-old Lloyd Gregory Ward was killed in the crash. He was employed as a driver by Martin’s Abattoir & Wholesale Meats.

According to North Carolina Highway Patrol First Sgt. Glenn Stokes, Ward apparently fell asleep at the wheel, ran off the road to the right, collided with a guardrail, and overturned.

Stokes said that Ward was partially ejected during the crash and the vehicle rolled over on top of him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Stokes, of the 33 cows Ward was transporting, nine died in the crash, five were shot due to their injuries, and 19 were rounded up by men on horseback who were called in by authorities.
