Gastonia Driver Involved In Tragic Accident
A Gastonia driver operating a truck struck a vehicle in Catawba County on Wednesday killing three inside.
The accident occurred at the intersection of N.C. 16 and N.C. 210 out of Newton. Joyce White and friend Ruby Leatherman had been shopping in Newton. Ms. White was driving and had her three grandchildren in the backseat.
As White drove through the intersection her vehicle was struck by the oncoming truck. Paul Brown of Gastonia, was the driver of the truck. He was driving for Hagan-Kennington Oil Company in Gastonia.
White and Leatherman were both killed in the accident, along with Cody Story, 12-years-old.
Cody’s two step brothers were airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, according to Bobby White, husband of Joyce White.
According to a hospital spokesman, both boys are in critical condition.
Bobby White said he was told by the N.C. Highway Patrol investigating the accident, that a traffic signal at the intersection had been malfunctioning. A power outage had caused one side to flash red while the other side flashed yellow.
