Four Family Members Die In I-77 Crash

According to North Carolina authorities, a mother, father, and two children died from the personal injuries they sustained in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 77 in Surry County on May 22 after their minivan crossed the median and collided head-on with two vehicles.

According to N.C. Highway Patrol Capt. Everett Clendenin, the New York-registered minivan was southbound at about 9 a.m. when it crossed the median and collided with two northbound vehicles.

Clendenin says that troopers believe the father, who was driving, fell asleep at the wheel. Other details and identities were not immediately made available.

The wreck required the highway to be closed in both directions either due to the wreck itself, or due to landing areas being needed for medical helicopters.
