The North Carolina Highway Patrol says that on the night of September 5, a woman from Fayetteville suffered fatal personal injuries when she was hit by a vehicle while walking along U.S. 401 near Pittman Grove Church Road.
According to Trooper David Key, 23-year-old Kalen Salinas was walking northeast along the highway at approximately 10:30 p.m. when she was hit from behind by a vehicle that was traveling in the same direction.
Key said that Salinas was walking in the right-hand lane, the lane the vehicle was also traveling in, and she was struck by the vehicle.
The Hoke County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call about someone walking in the road before the accident, but by the time a deputy arrived, Salinas had already been struck, according to Key. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police have not charged the driver, 51-year-old Charlotte resident Stewart Gerald.
