Fatal Crash Kills Two From New Jersey

A New Jersey couple was killed this morning on Interstate I-95 north near Dunn.

Bert Baytops, 55, was driving to New Jersey along with his girlfriend, Tralina Covington. Baytop had picked up a vehicle in Georgia.

Baytop apparently fell asleep, ran off the right shoulder of the road, over-corrected, hit a guardrail in the median and the vehicle overturned. The vehicle came to rest upright in the middle of the northbound lanes. An 18-wheeler rammed into the rear of the vehicle, causing it to burst into flames.

Baytop died in the fire. Covington had been thrown from the vehicles and died from her injuries.

Jeffrey Drumm, of Conneticut, driver of the 18-wheeler was transporting a load of cars to Massachusetts. The 18-wheeler jackknifed and came to rest on a guardrail.
