Dunn Man Killed, Coats Woman Injured In Crash
North Carolina state troopers said that a 20-year-old man from Dunn suffered fatal personal injuries in a head-on collision south of Coats in Harnett County on the morning of December 18.
Troopers said a Toyota sedan driven by Larry Surles on N.C. Highway 55 East near Erwin Chapel Road crossed the center line and ran off the road to the left. He then over-corrected and the vehicle collided with an oncoming Suzuki sedan.
Surles was pronounced dead at the scene.
Troopers say the driver of the Suzuki was injured, but her injuries were not considered life-threatening. She was identified by her mother as 18-year-old Coats resident Amber Hicks. She suffered a broken leg in the crash and was listed in fair condition at WakeMed as of December 19.
Troopers said it is unknown why Surles crossed the center line.
