Drunk Driver Causes Fatal Accident
An accident on Great Marsh Church Road in Lumberton claimed the life of a passenger Wednesday.
Wesley E. Sikes was charged with a DWI, aggravated death by motor vehicle and hit and run according to a report filed by Trooper H. P. Locklear.
The vehicle being operated by Sikes ran off the road and hit a mailbox. As Sikes came back onto the road, he ran off the other side of the road and into a ditch. The vehicle traveled about 300 feet after the impact.
A passenger, Willie Benson, was thrown from the vehicle. He was not wearing a seatbelt.
Benson died from the injuries he sustained at Southeastern Regional Medical Center.
Sikes ran after the accident, but was found a short time later.
