Driver Runs Through Fencing Around Chatham County Courthouse

Officials said that on the afternoon of May 4, a car crashed into the fencing and scaffolding around the Chatham County Courthouse, resulting in the driver being taken to the hospital for personal injuries.

The fencing had been in place since March 25, the date a fire caused severe damage to the courthouse. According to authorities, the car failed to stop as it was entering the traffic circle around the courthouse shortly after 2 p.m.

Though the driver, Salmon David Alston, did not seem to have suffered serious injuries, he received ambulance transport to the hospital.

The county is assessing the damage to the structures around the courthouse. Officials said the vehicle would not be removed until an evaluation of the scaffolding has been completed.
