Driver Misses Exit and Causes Fiery Five Vehicle Accident

The driver of an Isuzu missed his exit and crossed several lanes to reach it, causing a multiple vehicle accident on Monday evening in Raleigh.

The Isuzu, traveling on I-40 east, hit a tractor-trailer, lost control and then ran off the road into the tree line. It then traveled back into the eastbound lane, hit a minivan and threw it into a garbage truck.

The driver of the garbage truck lost control, crossed the median and hit a Dodge traveling in the westbound lane. The garbage truck then ran off the road, overturned and spilled refuse.

The truck caught fire with the driver, Robert J. Leffer of Sanford, inside. Clay Roberson, a witness, helped pull Leffer out of the burning truck.

Leffer was transported to the Jaycees Burn Center at UNC Hospital, with severe burns. He was listed in critical condition.

The Isuzu driver, Osmar Guillermo Perez Vicente was transported to WakeMed.

A passenger in the vehicle with Vincente was taken to Duke Hospital.

Others in the accident were treated and released.
