Dangers at NC Assisted Living Centers

Families with elderly relatives rely on nursing homes and assisted living centers in North Carolina. Caring for aging parents is a trend that only continues to grow. According to AARP, 22.4 million households care for aging family members. The challenge for most families in North Carolina is finding an affordable adult care facility that is safe, clean and offers top medical care.

NC Nursing Home Fire

A recent fire at North Raleigh assisted living center Elmcroft of Northridge, on Newton Road, evacuated its residents because of a fire caused by an employee. The employee was following the facility's restrictions and smoking within the appropriate smoking area; however their cigarette fell into a crack full of more cigarettes that had gathered there over time.

Nursing Home Abuse Claims

The fire didn't cause damage to the building or injuries to employees or residents. It was put out with a fire extinguisher. But do many families request a nursing home's evacuation plan when they choose a center for their loved one? Families are typically concerned about stereotypical nursing home dangers like dehydration, malnutrition and bed sores. Abuse in nursing homes is dangerous--not just because it disrespects a loved one's comfort and dignity, but because these actions of nursing home abuse in NC can lead to death. Anyone suspicious of the care their loved one is receiving at a NC nursing home should read our signs of nursing home abuse blog.

Neglect and Abuse of Elderly

Assisted living residents are at the mercy of the attendants who care for them. When families choose a nursing home for their loved one, they need to investigate the center's reputation, history of complaints, review policies and procedures (like an evacuation plan in case of a fire like the North Raleigh nursing home above or a hurricane) and read more about picking a nursing home in NC.
