Two men who were cousins suffered fatal personal injuries on the night of June 8 when the all-terrain vehicles they were operating collided head-on with one another near a private road near Mount Airy, reported emergency officials in Surry County.

According to Emergency Services Director John Shelton, 20-year-old Chad Everett Moore and 19-year-old Steve Smith Jarvis III died after a head-on collision between their ATVs near Crane Lane in Pine Ridge.

Shelton referred to the collision as a “freak accident,” saying that both men were rounding a bend in the trail and never saw one another. He said that neither man was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident and alcohol and drugs are not believed to have been factors.

Shelton said the ATVs were traveling at an estimated speed of 25-30 mph when the collision occurred.

An aunt of both men says that they both regularly rode in the area and had left together to go riding on the night of the accident. It is not certain when they split up and began to travel in opposite directions.
