Compassionate Allowances for Social Security Disability
Filing for Social Security disability benefits can be a complicated and time-consuming process for many people. However, recognizing that some disabilities require quick action, the Social Security Administration has developed a compassionate allowance initiative to help individuals with certain diseases and conditions receive benefits in a timely manner.
The Social Security Administration has compiled a list of 165 conditions -- including rare diseases and cancers -- that are eligible for compassionate allowances. This list is expected to expand in the future. Conditions on the most current list include:
- early-onset Alzheimer's;
- acute leukemia; and
- pancreatic cancer.
To learn if your condition is included, please view Social Security Administration's full list of compassionate allowances conditions.
