Collision Between Tour Bus And 18-Wheeler Near Belmont Injures 10
Ten people suffered personal injuries on a crash on Interstate 85 near Gaston and Mecklenburg counties on July 1 when a tour bus rear-ended an 18-wheeler while heading to a concert.
According to Gaston County EMS, two people sustained serious injuries in the accident and received air transport to Carolina Medical Center Main Hospital in Charlotte. The other eight were taken to a nearby hospital.
The tour bus was transporting a Christian music group known as The Bowling Family made up of Mike and Kelly Bowling and Terah Crabb Penhollow, in addition to the group’s children.
According to Beckie Simmons, the booking agent for the group, Mike Bowling who is the group’s lead singer, was one of the two people to sustain serious injuries and be airlifted to CMC Main.
Belmont police say the tour bus rear-ended a Smithfield Food tractor-trailer, pushing it into a box truck, shortly before rush hour.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
