On March 22, the Chatham County Sheriff’s Department said that one of its officers suffered personal injuries in a crash that took place in Moncure at approximately 6 a.m.

Deputy Jon Purvis was in the process of responding to a call of an officer requiring assistance when he lost control of his patrol vehicle at U.S. 1 and Pittsboro Moncure Road. The car ran off the road and collided with a tree.

Purvis received transport to UNC Hospitals with injuries that are not believed to be serious.

The crash is currently under investigation by the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the assistance call was regarding a prisoner who had gotten out of restraints. Several other officers responded and the prisoner was restrained.

Deputy Purvis is a New Hanover County resident who has been with the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office for 22 months.
