Chadbourn Man Killed In Crash
Columbus County Coroner Linwood Cartrette said that a patch of ice was a contributing factor in a crash in which fatal personal injuries were suffered on the night of January 12.
Cartrette said that 33-year-old Chadbourn resident Edward Demetrist Stackhouse died in a crash shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Old U.S. 74 near Silverspoon Road in the Evergreen Community.
Stackhouse was traveling at an estimated rate of speed between 65 and 70 mph when he lost control of the 1993 Pontiac Firebird he was driving after hitting a patch of ice.
The vehicle slid 156 feet on the pavement, went across a ditch, skidded another 132 feet across an ice-covered field, and slid into a drainage ditch. Stackhouse was the lone occupant of the vehicle. He was not wearing a seat belt and partially ejected. The vehicle landed on the driver’s side, pinning him underneath.
