Brake Failure Causes Truck Fire On I-40 Near Morganton, NC

Just now dangerous are commercial truck brake failures? We found out this week in Morganton, North Carolina, when an 18-wheeler experienced brake failure while driving on Interstate 40 and caught on fire.

While the truck was able to safely pull onto the shoulder of I-40, detach the cab from the trailer, and escape the fire without injury, the contents of the trailer went up in flames. The 18-wheeler was a moving truck filled with the possessions of three families moving to North Carolina. The majority of the contents of the truck – which consisted of everything from furniture to photo albums -- were destroyed beyond repair.

The big rig accident and fire, which took place on Tuesday, April 5, near the Bethel Road exit of I-40, closed part of the eastbound lanes as emergency crews put out the fire and cleaned up the wreckage.
