The North Carolina Highway Patrol said a 22-year-old woman from Bladenboro suffered fatal personal injuries on the morning of May 7 when she was hit by her boyfriend's car.
Trooper K.D. Ivey said 22-year-old Kristy Nicole Yarbrough was sitting on Old Stake Road near Chadbourn when she was struck by a 2000 Hyundai driven by her boyfriend, 22-year-old Mitchell Monroe Ransom II.
Ivey said the couple had been drinking at a nearby party. Witnesses at the party said Yarbrough had left on foot because Ransom wasn't ready to leave at the same time.
According to Ivey, Ransom left about 15 minutes later to search for Yarbrough. He drove north, turned around, and struck her while heading back south.
Conditions at the time were foggy and Ransom said he didn't see Yarbrough before the collision, Ivey said. The trooper said the damage to the car and Yarbrough's injuries indicated she was sitting at the time. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ransom was charged with felony death by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter, and DWI, Ivey said.
