A woman from Raleigh is faced with charges of driving while impaired after a November 14 accident in which her car struck and caused critical personal injuries to a bicyclist.
Police say 30-year-old Brandis Chevelle Thomas was driving a 2006 Toyota sedan that struck Raleigh resident Justin Gabriel Walker as he was riding a bike along New Bern Avenue, near Dickens Drive, at about 3:45 a.m.
The impact threw Walker and his bike 110 feet. He landed on the pavement on the right side of the road, according to the accident report. Thomas continued driving for about 2,000 before making a U-turn and returning to the scene of the crash.
Walker received transport to WakeMed, where he was listed in critical condition.
According to the police accident report, Thomas was impaired by alcohol and talking on a cell phone at the time of the crash.
Police charged Thomas with DWI and serious injury by vehicle.
