Charges have officially been filed by the Johnston County Highway Patrol against a Benson man for a three-car crash near the Johnston-Sampson County line in which an elderly Wallace man suffered fatal personal injuries.
The NCHP charged 26-year-old Joseph Bayfden with misdemeanor death by vehicle and running a stop sign. He reportedly drove through the intersection of N.C. 242 and N.C. 55 and struck a Toyota Tacoma carrying Wallace residents Roy and Robbie English.
Roy English, 78, died after being taken to WakeMed. His wife, 76-year-old Robbie English, underwent surgery at WakeMed and is expected to survive. Bayfden and his 3-year-old son also received transport to WakeMed with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.
According to Highway Patrol Master Trooper C.J. Bell, the crash occurred because Bayfden “just wasn’t paying attention.” He said Bayfden attempted to stop at the last second, but it was too late.
Bayfden’s court date has been set for December 16.
