One person was killed and another suffered personal injuries in a traffic accident on the morning of June 30 on Deep Ford Road in Lansing.
Trooper E.W. McConnell of the North Carolina Highway Patrol said that 16-year-old Crumpler resident Shani Marie Dishman was pronounced dead and 19-year-old Jefferson resident Cody James Collins received transport to Forsyth County Baptist Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition as of that afternoon.
According to McConnell, the 1994 Toyota Corolla, which was driven by Collins, ran off the road shortly after 6 a.m. Collins overcorrected and the vehicle came back onto the road before colliding with a utility pole on the driver’s side. The vehicle was totaled.
Robert Poe of Blue Ridge Medical Transport said that Blue Ridge Medical, Ashe County Rescue, and Lansing Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene. One of the victims was pinned and took nearly an hour to extricate before being transported to a trauma center via Med Center Air out of Charlotte. The second victim was taken to Ashe Memorial Hospital.
McConnell said that the crash remains under investigation and charges are pending. Vehicle speed is a possible factor in the crash.
