Angier Man Killed In Fiery Crash

On the morning of December 6, 23-year-old Angier resident Richard Ray Winders suffered fatal personal injuries in a crash that occurred shortly before 4 a.m.

North Carolina State Trooper B.J. Holder said that Winders had just left the home of a friend and was following another group of friends. All of them were driving east toward Angier on the private drive, Wells Lane.

Holder said that Winders, who was traveling at an estimated speed of 80 mph, attempted to pass his friend’s vehicle when his truck crossed the center line, hit a guardrail, and ran off the road.

Winder’s Chevrolet pickup truck then careened into a wooden fence that surrounded a horse pasture and collided with a tree. Holder said Winder was rendered unconscious by the impact and pinned inside the truck, which caught fire.

Winders’ friends attempted to extract him from the truck, but it became fully engulfed in flames.

Holder said that both speed and alcohol are believed to have been factors.
