The North Carolina Highway Patrol reported that an off-duty Randolph County deputy sustained serious personal injuries in a Fourth of July weekend accident in which alcohol was a factor.

According to a report in the Asheboro Courier-Tribune, 27-year-old deputy Luccas Barber was driving along Bethany Church Road near Randleman on the night of July 3 when he lost control of the sport utility vehicle he was driving and crashed.

Barber received air transport to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, where he was listed in critical but stable condition.

Barber was charged with driving while impaired and exceeding a safe speed.
