Accident Involves Train and Tractor Trailer
Accident Involves Train and Tractor TrailerThirteen people were injured in an accident involving an Amtrack train and a tractor trailer in Mebane.
Train service from Charlotte to New York was interrupted.
The injured were transported to UNC Hospital, Duke University Hospital and Alamance Regional Medical Center.
According to the police the tractor trailer was carrying heavy construction equipment. The tractor trailer was making a turn when it it got stuck on the tracks. A westbound train, number 73, carrying 36 passengers struck the truck.
The train and three coach cars derailed catching fire.
Diesel fuel from the train burst and began to blaze. A witness said it sounded like an explosion. It was said that debris began to fly off of the train onto vehicles.
The driver of the tractor trailer made it out of the truck before the collision. According to the driver, the tractor trailer had an equipment problem.
The accident was being investigated.
