Aberdeen Accident Claims 90-Year-Old Man

According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, a 90-year-old man suffered fatal personal injuries on April 5 while attempting to cross U.S. 15-501 just south of Aberdeen.

Trooper K.J. Evans said that the accident took place shortly after 6 a.m. He said Aberdeen resident R.C. Styers was using a walker for support and had crossed the northbound lane of the two-lane highway.

As Styers was crossing the southbound lane, he was struck by a 2009 Chrysler van driven by 76-year-old Dundee, New York resident James Joseph Gehl. Gehl said he attempted to avoid Styers, but was unsuccessful.

Evans said that at the time of the accident, Gehl was traveling at a rate of 45 mph, which is the posted speed limit for the area.
