6-Year-Old Girl Dead In Crash En Route To Wedding Near Greenville

On the afternoon of April 9, a 6-year-old girl suffered fatal personal injuries in a head-on collision while traveling to a wedding.

According to North Carolina state troopers, the accident took place on N.C. Highway 43 between Greenville and Falkland. The victim, 6-year-old Ava Kendall, was traveling south to Greenville in a Honda Accord with two bridesmaids.

Troopers said a northbound Jeep Cherokee crossed the center line and struck the Honda head-on. Kendall was killed.

Kendall was to be a flower girl in the wedding of Rachel Jones, who said she came across the scene on her way to the church and "knew right away."

The Honda's driver, 22-year-old Michele Garland, a second passenger in the Honda, 13-year-old Lindsey Whitehurst, and the Jeep's driver, 39-year-old Pinetops resident Mupin Wu Cummings, received transport to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in fair condition.

Troopers said the crash remains under investigation. Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor.
