4-Year-Old Dies in Accident
A little girl, 4 years old died Sunday after she and four others were thrown from a four-wheel drive vehicle two miles off Slocumb Road.
Rainey Edington was pronounced dead according to N.C. Highway Patrolman A. L. Green.
The accident occurred in an area referred to as The Pit. This area is a popular place for four-wheeling.
The vehicle, driven by John R. Croom, Jr. was climbing a steep hill when it got stuck.
Croom locked the vehicle into four-wheel-drive and accelerated speed. The vehicle turned over end over end down the hill.
A woman, Sarah Edington and two other children, Candace Croom and Ivy Bint were also passengers in the vehicle. No one in the vehicle was wearing a seat belt.
Everyone was transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
Ivy Bint was airlifted to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.
The accident is under investigation.
