$20 Million Awarded in Fayetteville Hospital Negligence

A Cumberland County jury has returned a verdict of $20 million for a child who suffered catastrophic injuries from assault by a man living with the child's mom. The victim, 14-year-old Ajamu Gaines, Jr., will receive approximately $20 million after a Cumberland County jury ruled in his favor.

Fayetteville Hospital Lawsuit

In 2003 at 6 years old, Gaines visited the Fayetteville hospital with broken bones. Only 3 months later he returned with a brain in-jury. According to WRAL, "doctors eventually found scars and broken ribs that indicated more than 50 injuries dating back six months."

Child Abuse Settlements in NC

The settlement should cover lifetime care for Gaines who has spastic quadriplegia, which is a condition that left him with partial control over only one arm and neither of his legs.

NC Child Protective Services

If you suspect a child is being abused, contact the North Carolina Division of Social Services. Every county in North Carolina has their own division for social services. How do you know if a child is being abused in NC? Sudden school performance or behavior changes may occur. This doesn't necessarily mean poor grades and misbehaving tendencies. A focus on overachieving can also indicate a child is being abused. Unexplained bruises, absence from school and fear or avoidance of going home are also signs that abuse is present.

Signs of Child Abuse in NC

The abused child may not exhibit any noticeable symptoms. Parents' behavior can also be telling. Child Protective Services should be notified if the child's guardian shows little interest in school functions, denies wrong-doing, and demands perfection that the child is incapable of or has a reputation for alcohol or drug abuse.

Child Neglect Reports

After social services is notified, it is a legal requirement for an assessment to take place. One of their officials will visit the child's home and investigate the living environment to make sure it is safe.
